Chapter 16 · Adult Link · Overworld
Kakariko Village in Flames
Fresh from the Water Temple, you return to Kakariko to find it ablaze and something dark stirring at the bottom of the well. Sheik gives you the way into the next temple, but you'll need to travel back to childhood first to claim the tool that makes it survivable.
Quick answer
Learn the Nocturne of Shadow, then return as young Link and drain the Kakariko well.
- You get
- Nocturne of Shadow
- Where
- Hyrule Field, Kakariko Village, Temple of Time, Kakariko Graveyard
- Length
- 6 parts, 28 steps
Return to Kakariko
- #1.1
Head back across Hyrule Field to the stone staircase that climbs into Kakariko Village. Calling Epona and riding is the fastest way over from Lake Hylia.
- Tip#1.2
The Fire Arrows from Lake Hylia aren't required for this stretch of the game, but they make several upcoming puzzles easier. Grab them first if you skipped them.
- #1.3
Climb the stairs and enter the village. A scene starts as soon as you arrive.
- Watch out#1.4
The burning-village scene only plays once you've finished the Forest, Fire and Water Temples. If Kakariko looks normal, one of those Medallions is still missing.
The Burning Village
- #2.1
Kakariko is on fire and the villagers have scattered. Run to the well in the middle of the village, where Sheik is standing.
- #2.2
Watch as the well's lid bursts apart and an invisible force tears out of it, flinging Sheik across the square before it slams into you and knocks you out.
- #2.3
When you come to, Sheik explains: Impa had sealed a shadow creature at the bottom of the well, it has broken free, and Impa has gone to the Shadow Temple to seal it again. She's in danger.
- You get#2.4
Sheik teaches you the Nocturne of Shadow. Playing it warps you to a ledge above Kakariko Graveyard, the only way an adult can reach the Shadow Temple.
- Tip#2.5
The flames are gone after the scene, and the village is safe to explore again.
Prepare for the Shadow Temple
- Watch out#3.1
Don't warp to the Shadow Temple yet. Its halls are full of invisible floors, fake walls and hidden enemies, and you need the Lens of Truth to see them. The Lens is in the Bottom of the Well, which only young Link can enter.
- #3.2
You also need Din's Fire. The temple's entrance stays sealed until a ring of torches is lit all at once, and Din's Fire is the tool for that.
- Tip#3.3
The Lens drains magic the whole time it's active. If your magic meter is still single length, the Great Fairy in Death Mountain Crater doubles it; her fountain hides behind a rock you smash with the Megaton Hammer.
- #3.4
For the well, young Link needs Bombs, Deku Sticks, the Fairy Slingshot, the Boomerang, and three songs: Zelda's Lullaby, the Sun's Song and the Song of Storms. Songs carry over between ages, so the Song of Storms you just learned works as a child too.
Back to Childhood
- #4.1
Play the Prelude of Light to warp into the Temple of Time.
- #4.2
Return the Master Sword to the Pedestal of Time. Seven years roll back and you're young Link again.
- Tip#4.3
Missing Din's Fire? As a child, look near the front of Hyrule Castle for a dead-end nook blocked by a boulder. Blow it open with a bomb, go inside and play Zelda's Lullaby, and the Great Fairy grants you Din's Fire.
- #4.4
Leave Hyrule Market, cross Hyrule Field and climb back up into Kakariko Village.
- Tip#4.5
Top up on bombs and Deku Sticks before you go down. The well has boulders to blast, torches to light and coffins that open only when lit.
Drain the Well
- #5.1
Walk into the windmill. The man inside is the same one who taught you the Song of Storms seven years from now, though here he's just enjoying his music box.
- #5.2
Take out your ocarina and play the Song of Storms inside the windmill.
- #5.3
A storm rolls in, the windmill's blades whip around at a frantic pace and the pump goes wild. The man is furious, and the well in the middle of the village drains completely. It's the very incident he complained about in the future.
- Collectible#5.4
While you're in the windmill, ride the rotating platform, hop onto one of the stone blocks beside it, and throw the Boomerang at the Piece of Heart in the alcove high on the wall to bring it back to you.
- #5.5
Go to the well. With the water gone, climb down inside and crawl into the Bottom of the Well.
- Watch out#5.6
Only young Link can explore the Bottom of the Well; as an adult the well is sealed. Grab everything you want there on this visit.
Optional Stops in Kakariko
- Collectible#6.1
If you haven't already: release bugs from a bottle over the patch of soft soil in Kakariko Graveyard as young Link, and a Gold Skulltula crawls out.
- Tip#6.2
Plant a Magic Bean in that same soft soil. As an adult, the bean plant carries you up to a ledge where a crate hides a Piece of Heart.
- Collectible#6.3
At night, the gravekeeper Dampé runs a gravedigging tour: pay 10 Rupees and point him at a spot to dig. Prizes are random, but keep trying and he eventually unearths a Piece of Heart.
- Tip#6.4
As a child, the Sun's Song changes day to night instantly, which is handy for the gravedigging tour and for nighttime Gold Skulltulas.
